"Unlocking English and the secret that no one tells you about fluency."
Have you ever wondered why, even after studying hard, you still struggle with English at the moments when you need it the most? Do you feel like you need to unlock your English?
Whether it's in meetings, job interviews, or conversations with colleagues?
Imagine this: you prepare for hours for an English interview, you know exactly what you need to say, but when the time comes, you simply freeze...
Has it ever happened to you?
So relax: it's possible to unlock your English and no longer go through such difficult moments.
But for that, mastering the language isn't always enough. Intriguing, right?
There is a logic behind fluent English and exactly how to unlock your English for use in your career.
Why do you freeze with English?
There's a reason no one tells you about: having knowledge of vocabulary and grammar isn't enough to unlock for you.
Mastery of the language is important but beyond that, you need to prepare your mind so that it works in your favor in moments of high nervousness, such as work meetings or interviews in English.
These moments often cause anxiety, fear of speaking incorrectly or forgetting words, and even the apprehension of being judged for pronunciation. Am I right?
Generally, this happens due to negative beliefs and thoughts that prevent you from feeling confident and secure when speaking English.
Neuroscience shows that, mainly because of these thoughts, our brain perceives situations of anxiety as dangerous scenarios.
So, in the middle of a meeting, you start to break out in a cold sweat, your heart races, and fear takes over...
It's not your fault. This is a natural mechanism of the brain that protects us from danger.
But when you work to eliminate these beliefs and control your emotions during a situation where your English is needed, you unlock.
How to unlock English using the mind to learn?
Unlocking the mind to learn English is a task that requires effort but will make a difference in your fluency. Discover 3 essential steps for success:
1. Identify your limiting beliefs
The first step is to identify your negative beliefs. Analyze your thoughts: which ones sabotage you?
Some common beliefs I notice among my students are these:
"English is too difficult"
"I'm too old to learn a language"
"They'll judge my pronunciation or accent"
"I'm not good at English"
"I always draw a blank"
"I can't control nervousness"
"I need to travel abroad to be fluent"
Do you identify with any of these myths? Then move on to the next step.
2. Argue against your beliefs
After identifying negative beliefs, it's time to argue against them.
Question your beliefs with the following questions:
Is there any basis for this belief?
Are there facts and data that support this belief?
Since when have I had these thoughts?
Does this belief bring me closer or further from my goal of unlocking?
By questioning these beliefs, you'll engage your rational mind and make your brain realize that these beliefs are just myths.
3. Make positive affirmations
The next step is to cultivate positive affirmations to reinforce your self-confidence and weaken sabotaging thoughts.
The more you repeat these affirmations, the more your subconscious understands that this positive pattern is important and works to make it a reality.
That's why it's important that every day you spend a few minutes making positive affirmations like:
I'm progressing every day
English is easy for me
I'm capable of learning English at my age
I'm getting the hang of learning
I can control my emotions
My pronunciation is getting better every day.
3 practical steps to unlock pronunciation and listening in English
Now that you know how to unlock the mind, you also need to know techniques to unlock pronunciation and listening in English.
In other words: the more "practical" side of fluency related to mastering the language.
See 3 important tips below:
1. Apply the LR2S Method to unlock English
I've developed a method that allows you to exercise the REC cycle, a concept based on Neuroscience and how the brain learns, stating that we form memories in 3 stages: repetition, elaboration, and consolidation.
It's my LR2S Method, also formed by 3 fundamental learning stages that allow you to unlock your listening and speaking.
To apply the method, all you need to do is listen to an audio in English (like a podcast, for example) with the text transcript on paper.
From there, you apply the following steps:
Listening/Reading
The first step is to listen to the text and read the transcript at the same time. Doing these two activities increases your understanding of what's being said and reinforces your ability to understand what others say.
Shadowing
Next, it's time to apply shadowing, a technique widely used by polyglots worldwide.
As the name suggests, it involves "shadowing" the text and allows you to build muscle memory, improving pronunciation.
Listen to the audio and repeat the phrases several times, imitating the intonation and pronunciation of the narrator.
Do this first with the text transcript and then without it.
Sprints
Finally, do sprints: analyze the sentence structures in the text and try to modify them to fit your reality, creating new examples related to your routine.
While formulating new sentences related to your context,
repeat the pronunciation several times at a faster pace to train.
2. Know how to reverse the forgetting curve
Have you studied English vocabulary, but noticed that some days later, the terms disappeared from your memory?
There's a concept that explains this phenomenon: the forgetting curve. It's a theory created by the German philosopher Hermann Ebbinghaus that shows that after 48 hours of studying, our brain loses between 70% and 80% of the content.
It's a natural process since the brain receives a lot of information all the time.
So, how do you indicate that the vocabulary you learn is important?
Through spaced repetition. Or, in simpler terms, constant reviews of content.
When you review vocabulary, you alert your brain that this content is important and should be stored in long-term memory.
This is a way for you to flatten the forgetting curve and enhance your learning.
3. Study vocabulary and grammar
There's no other way: to unlock English, studying vocabulary and grammar consistently is essential.
Even if you already have a foundation in English, dedicating at least 15 minutes daily to study and review will allow you to constantly improve and have more repertoire when speaking.
